CELBIOTECH
Engineering and Biotechnology of Lignocellulosic and Papermaking Materials
Using biomass as a substitute for plastics
A research group recognised by the Government of Catalonia as an established research group in 2017 (SGR 30), specialising in lignocellulosic and paper materials. Its core research focuses on the manipulation and modification of compounds in the pulp and paper sector, and on the use and conversion of biomass to obtain new materials, fibres or products with new properties. Particular emphasis is placed on environmental and energy-related aspects, with the aim of aligning its work with the concepts of biorefining and process sustainability..

Research and knowledge transfer areas in the agri-food sector
- Production of high-value-added cellulosic products, such as bioactive papers and other products that can replace existing, less sustainable materials on the market
- Production of cellulosic microfibres and/or nanofibres using biotechnological methods that consume less energy and are more environmentally friendly.
- Comprehensive use of renewable materials (cellulose, lignin and hemicelluloses) or by-products from the processing of lignocellulosic materials to obtain bioproducts.
- Cellulosic biomaterials for packaging perishable foods, with the aim of extending shelf life while maintaining quality.
The group's network of collaborations
- Red Biòlegs
- Red LIGNOCEL
