Who the project is aimed at

Primarily the livestock and agricultural sectors, particularly livestock producers, farmers, research centres, public administrations and companies interested in sustainable farming systems, livestock waste management and alternatives to chemical fertilisers. It is also relevant to stakeholders involved in the circular economy and agricultural innovation.

Project objective

To demonstrate the feasibility of using liquid fertilisers derived from pig manure treated with ozone technology in aeroponic crops, with the aim of extending their application to conventional crops. This makes it possible to turn a problematic waste product into a useful resource, promoting environmental sustainability and reducing dependence on chemical fertilisers.

Project description

AEROFER is a Knowledge Transfer Demonstration Activity that proposes reusing pig manure, generally considered an environmental problem, as a liquid organic fertiliser for aeroponic crops. These fertilisers are obtained through an innovative ozone treatment process that stabilises nitrogen and improves nutrient balance.

The experiments are conducted under real-world conditions using aeroponic platforms equipped with sensing and monitoring systems, where different plant varieties are grown. This enables precise monitoring of the growth process and validation of the efficiency of organic fertilisers compared with conventional alternatives.

The project aims to contribute to a more sustainable production model by closing the nutrient cycle, minimising soil and groundwater pollution, and promoting the circular economy in agriculture.
