Who is the project aimed at?

Electricity grid operators, power electronics companies, system integrators, irrigation communities, energy and environmental policymakers, and the agricultural and energy sectors in general, who are interested in sustainable and innovative energy storage solutions.

Project objective

To develop, demonstrate and integrate innovative energy storage systems that enable better integration of renewable energy sources, maximise operational efficiency and strengthen electricity grid reliability in the context of the energy transition.

Project description

With the increase in renewable energy generation and the reduction in fossil fuel sources, the electricity grid needs flexible systems such as energy storage to ensure stability and security. In this context, the AGISTIN project, led by the CITCEA-UPC research centre, is developing technologies that integrate renewable energy sources, storage systems and consumers through direct current (DC) coupling.

AGISTIN will develop advanced open-source control algorithms to coordinate the system components, enabling manufacturers and integrators to implement customised solutions. The project will be demonstrated through two pilot installations: one in the Netherlands and another in Catalonia, at the Segrià Sud irrigation system.

The latter pilot, developed in collaboration with Infraestructures.cat and the Segrià Sud Irrigation Community, will transform the irrigation system into a hybrid energy and water storage solution. Solar panels, storage systems and intelligent controls will be combined to optimise pumping, reduce costs and contribute to sustainability. This model can be replicated in other distributed irrigation systems across Catalonia and Spain, strengthening the energy transition through distributed storage.
