Project: CARAMEL: artificial intelligence-based cybersecurity for connected and automated vehicles
Web:
Who the project is aimed at
Vehicle manufacturers, information technology companies, mobility operators, regulatory bodies and researchers interested in the cybersecurity of connected, cooperative, autonomous and electric vehicles.
Project objective
To develop innovative cybersecurity solutions based on artificial intelligence and machine learning to address emerging risks associated with vehicle connectivity and automation.
CARAMEL develops cybersecurity solutions for the next generation of cars:
- Autonomous cars: cyberattacks do not require physical access to the vehicle or tampering with its communication system.
- 5G-connected vehicles: V2X applications interconnect not only vehicles but also infrastructure and pedestrians, making it essential to protect V2X functions against misuse.
- Electric mobility: unauthorised access to and control of EVSE charging stations, as well as firmware tampering, must be prevented.
Project description
CARAMEL aims to address current cybersecurity challenges associated with future vehicles. The project takes a comprehensive approach, considering various types of vehicles — cooperative, connected, autonomous and electric — and developing methodologies and tools to prevent and mitigate vulnerabilities.
Although established security protocols exist, emerging technologies such as autonomous driving, smart charging and vehicle-to-vehicle communication create vulnerabilities that must be addressed with advanced solutions. In this context, CARAMEL will develop intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS/IPS), services for managing complex cyberattacks, and scalable, interoperable ICT infrastructures to ensure sustainable cybersecurity and protect digital privacy.
This project takes place against a backdrop of exponential growth in connected devices, which increases the risk of cyberattacks.
Project funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Industrial Leadership programme.
