Who the project is aimed at

Horticultural producers, pest management professionals and agricultural policymakers interested in sustainable production and the biological control of plant-parasitic nematodes, especially Meloidogyne, in horticultural crops.

Project objective

To develop sustainable strategies for the integrated management of Meloidogyne by inducing resistance in plants and using cover crops with biofumigant and trap effects. This includes evaluating new resistance-inducing agents, selecting suitable cover crops and transferring knowledge through practical guides for their application..

Project description

Given the limited availability of resistant germplasm and the need to promote more sustainable agriculture, the project proposes two complementary approaches: inducing plant resistance through biotic and abiotic agents, and incorporating cover crops —such as brassicas and sorghum— with biofumigant and trap properties.

This approach will not only improve the integrated management of Meloidogyne, regardless of the pathogen's virulence, but will also enhance soil fertility and microbial diversity. The project aims to produce two practical guides for applying these strategies to horticultural crops.
