Project: REAL-MAC. Reuse of agri-food effluents for microalgae production and their application in circular agriculture for the territory

Who is the project aimed at?

Agri-food sector companies, offering sustainable solutions for effluent treatment
and the production of organic products.

Project objective

REAL-MAC aims to develop prototypes of organic agricultural products following
a circular strategy based on the cultivation of microalgae in agri-food effluents. The
project will demonstrate the potential of microalgae production as a biological solution for
recovering nutrients from three types of agri-food effluents and will apply sustainable technologies
to transform algal biomass into fertilisers, biostimulants and biofungicides. These
bio-based product prototypes will be tested in organic farming and hydroponics to combat
agricultural diseases with an economic impact, while taking into account environmental factors related
to climate change.

Project description

The agri-food sector faces the need to implement more
sustainable solutions for managing its effluents and reducing the environmental impact of production
processes. In this context, the REAL-MAC project aims to develop prototypes
of organic agricultural products through a circular strategy, using microalgae cultivation to
recover nutrients from agri-food effluents. This approach
would make it possible to transform waste from the agri-food industry into useful resources, such as
fertilisers, biostimulants and biofungicides, thereby contributing to cleaner and more
sustainable production. In addition, the project seeks to demonstrate the potential of microalgae as a biological solution to improve effluent quality and generate products that benefit both
organic farming and the use of innovative technologies to address the challenges of climate
change.
