Project: AI4WATER: Digital twins for irrigated agriculture

Who is the project aimed at?

Technology companies working in the field of smart agriculture, particularly in regions affected by water scarcity, such as the Mediterranean Basin.

Project objective

To optimise the use of water resources in irrigated agriculture through the development and implementation of a digital twin that enables more efficient and sustainable water management, thereby helping to mitigate the effects of the climate emergency on food security.

Project description

The AI4WATER project is developing a digital twin to optimise water use in irrigated agriculture in the Segarra-Garrigues area (Lleida). This virtual model combines data from an IoT network of soil moisture sensors, satellite images and ground-penetrating radar mounted on a robot to simulate and efficiently manage water resources. Coordinated by several UPC research groups, the project enables accurate estimates of water consumption, helping to save water and improve the sustainability of agricultural irrigation.

The digital twin is being implemented at the Ivars Cooperative and the Bell-lloc Cooperative.
