Website
Who the project is aimed at
Professionals in the food industry, sustainable packaging and materials science, as well as companies and research centres interested in developing functional, environmentally friendly bioplastics for industrial applications, particularly food packaging.
Project objective
To develop hydrophobic and antimicrobial films and coatings from chemically modified plant-based biopolymers, specifically polysaccharides, for use in food packaging and preservation.
Project description
This project aims to develop bioplastic films and coatings based on chemically modified polysaccharides to improve their hydrophobicity and antimicrobial properties, with direct applications in food packaging and preservation. Sustainable modification methods in aqueous media will be used with amphiphilic molecules such as fatty acids, lignin and proteins compatible with starch. The films will be produced by casting and their functional properties (permeability, antimicrobial activity and hydrophobicity) will be characterised. Finally, the effect of these materials on the preservation and shelf life of packaged foods will be assessed.
