Project: HybridTim. Hybrid timber construction systems

Website

Target audience

Construction sector professionals (architects, technical architects, engineers, builders, etc.) and the forestry sector

Project objective

The project's main challenges are:

  • To develop and offer a new cross-disciplinary module on the design and construction of buildings with hybrid timber structures that reflects advances in the timber construction sector.

  • To improve students' and teaching staff's skills in hybrid timber construction systems and exchange experiences with international students and teaching staff.

Project description

The HybridTim project aims to address the challenge of decarbonising the construction sector by promoting the construction of buildings with hybrid timber structures.

Most buildings today are designed and built using concrete and steel, generating large amounts of greenhouse gases and contributing to climate change and global warming. When sourced from sustainably managed forests, timber is a renewable resource that absorbs CO₂ throughout its lifetime. Hybrid systems make it possible to harness the potential of each material to construct high-rise buildings with high performance and a reduced carbon footprint.

The HybridTim project aims to meet the future higher education needs of students in the design and construction of high-performance, environmentally sustainable buildings using engineered timber hybrid systems, through innovative, student-centred, cross-disciplinary learning approaches.
