Target audience

Technology providers, as well as all stakeholders in the agri-food sector and entrepreneurs who will be able to identify new opportunities through access to valuable data and direct interaction with users, expanding local businesses on a European scale.

Project objective

Accelerate the adoption and maturity of IoT technologies in the agri-food sector to ensure safe and suitable food for future generations of European citizens and improve citizens' quality of life in both public and private settings in terms of autonomy, convenience, participatory approaches, health and lifestyle, and access to services..

IoT2020 paves the way for a more competitive European agricultural sector by providing access to key data that helps achieve higher, more sustainable and environmentally responsible production yields, while promoting new, innovative and disruptive business models.

Project description

It is planned to develop Internet applications for the agri-food sector through various research and accelerator projects, involving farmers and cooperatives in their design to ensure user acceptance and large-scale adoption.

These pilots will validate, among other aspects, technological choices, sustainability and replicability, architectures, standards, interoperability properties and key features such as security and privacy, vulnerability, accountability, and the identification of needs, concerns and expectations regarding IoT solutions;

IoT2020 aims to contribute to the development of viable IoT infrastructures at European level, extending beyond the duration of the pilot projects, which will contribute significantly and measurably, in the areas covered by the pilots, to standards or pre-standardisation activities through the implementation of open platforms.

Project funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Consortium comprising 120 partners from 22 EU countries. The project is led by Wageningen University & Research.
