Who the project is aimed at
Plant protection workers, agronomy experts, agricultural producers, plant health authorities and those interested in food security, agricultural sustainability and the control of emerging pests.
Project objective
To develop and validate an integrated set of new approaches to combat the emergence and spread of invasive and virulent soil nematodes, with a particular focus on root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) and potato cyst nematodes (Globodera spp.), which pose a growing threat to food security and the sustainability of crops such as tomatoes and potatoes in Europe.
Project description
This project addresses the spread of the soil nematodes that are most harmful to agriculture: root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) and potato cyst nematodes (Globodera spp.). These microscopic parasites damage the roots of crops such as tomatoes and potatoes, reducing their productivity and making them more vulnerable to environmental stress. They are difficult to detect and complex to eradicate, particularly in the context of climate change, which favours their spread and virulence. The project will develop innovative solutions for the detection, control and sustainable management of these nematodes, using a preventive and integrated approach.
