Project: Validation of sustainable, advanced natural technologies for the treatment, monitoring and reuse of safe water and wastewater in India
Who is the project aimed at
European and Indian industries and SMEs operating in the water and sanitation sector, with the aim of expanding their portfolios of sustainable and adapted products and services.
Project objective
To create a level playing field for European and Indian industries and SMEs operating in the water sector, paving the way for a potential joint venture to promote the widespread adoption of PAVITR solutions throughout India.
To transform waste streams into revenue streams, thereby laying the groundwork for the widespread and rapid market adoption of PAVITR systems and products through the implementation of specific and innovative “Reuse” business plans. Examples include promoting the reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture and recovering valuable nutrients from faecal sludge through the production of biofertilisers.
Project description
India is facing a water and sanitation crisis that could hinder the country's economic development, with water scarcity and pollution being among the most serious environmental problems nationwide. Traditionally, the country's water and sanitation sector has been owned and operated by the government. However, as the government cannot solve all these problems on its own, it is encouraging the private sector to participate in this complex process through partnership programmes and reforms. This opens up a wide range of business opportunities in different areas of water and sanitation management.
PAVITR's holistic approach will minimise the urban water footprint and reduce pollution in ecosystems and water sources used by downstream users, as minimal amounts of freshwater will become contaminated, while contaminated water will be treated and reused locally.
Project funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
