Who the project is aimed at

Rice growers.

Project objective

The aim of this project was to:

  • effectively protect rice fields;
  • significantly reduce fungicide consumption, minimising environmental impact;
  • increase food safety and improve crop yields.

Project description

RICE-GUARD provides local information to improve the accuracy and timeliness of forecasting models through a wireless sensor network consisting of low-cost measurement nodes capable of transmitting readings of site-specific relevant environmental variables from the field to a central server in real time. The system software combines this data with other relevant crop parameters to provide rice growers with up-to-date information.

The prototypes were tested across Europe in different rice-growing areas to ensure the reliability and functionality of the wireless system, assess its energy-harvesting capabilities and validate its sensing performance.
