Who is the project aimed at

The project results may be of interest to the agricultural sector, golf courses and football pitches, as well as for mapping urban subsoil.

Project objective

The main objective is to optimise irrigation by reducing water waste by up to 30% while ensuring that each tree receives exactly the amount of water it needs.

Rosaqua integrates subsoil moisture data with the location of the main roots. By automating data collection using robots, it reduces the need for intensive manual labour, allowing farmers to focus on higher-value tasks. This approach promotes more sustainable water resource management, minimises environmental impact and encourages environmentally friendly agricultural practices.

Project description

Agriculture faces growing challenges due to drought and the urgent need to optimise water use while maintaining productivity. The ROSAQUA project offers a prototype based on mobile robotics and advanced sensors, including GPR, RGB-D cameras, thermal cameras and NDVI sensors. This system provides centimetre-level accuracy when measuring subsoil moisture at depths of up to three metres. It also maps the distribution of roots with a diameter greater than 1 cm and monitors crop health using reference parameters such as water stress and NDVI values. This data enables the creation of 3D maps of field conditions, allowing water to be distributed precisely where it is needed.

The project is supported by ACTEL Group, the Catalan Water Partnership (CWP), FEMAC and WA4STEAM, which provide resources, access to pilot fields and assistance in securing funding. It also benefits from business mentoring by Fernando Ortega Mediero, an expert in business management and sustainability, as well as guidance from IVORO Adventures through the support of the Agritech Network.
