Project: WINTERTIME, IoT mesh networks with low-power radios

Who is the project aimed at

Researchers, engineers and companies in the telecommunications, Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 sectors, as well as professionals involved in developing low-power solutions and in application scenarios such as smart cities, mobility, vehicular communications and 5G networks.

Project objective

To design, analyse and implement an IoT mesh network based on low-power radios, enabling the integration of users and devices with incompatible communication technologies while minimising energy consumption and expanding the potential applications of these systems in different environments.

Project description

WINTERTIME aims to develop a mesh network infrastructure tailored to the Internet of Things using low-power radios. These radios are particularly suitable for devices that need to operate with low energy consumption and at reduced cost, avoiding the use of technologies such as Wi-Fi or LTE, which are less efficient for this type of application. The project is based on wake-up radio (WuR) systems, in which a secondary, ultra-low-power radio remains active to “wake up” the main radio only when high-capacity or low-latency communication is required. This approach maintains the system's energy efficiency without compromising performance when needed. WINTERTIME builds on the previous AllInOne project, also developed by WNG, in which WuR mechanisms were successfully tested to facilitate communication between devices with incompatible radios. This new phase focuses on developing innovative applications based on this architecture, with the aim of facilitating IoT integration into 5G networks, as well as in vehicular communication environments and even satellite networks.
