Research group: POLY2
Project: Bio2Coat: A functional edible coating to prevent grape deterioration
Who the project is aimed at
Primarily the wine and grape sector, especially wine grape and table grape producers, agricultural cooperatives, fruit handling and distribution companies, as well as plant health professionals and organisations involved in agri-food sustainability.
Project objective
To develop and validate a functional, edible and natural coating that protects grapes against diseases such as Botrytis cinerea, improving their preservation and quality and reducing losses throughout the production and marketing chain.
Project description
Bio2Coat is a technology developed by the POLY2 group at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), based on the use of edible coatings made from biopolymers and natural compounds, free from plant protection products and allergens. This coating is applied directly to the grapes by spraying or misting, forming a protective film that acts as a barrier against microorganisms and controls fruit transpiration.
This technology helps extend the shelf life of grapes, improves transport and storage conditions, and reduces losses and food waste. It also offers a sustainable and healthy alternative to conventional plant protection treatments. The project has been transferred to the spin-off company Bio2Coat SL and is protected by patents.
Technology Transfer under the Rural Development Programme of Catalonia 2014-2022
