Project: XICLETFUN. Functional chewing gums through microencapsulation using physicochemical methods
Who the project is aimed at
The food industry, particularly the confectionery sector, with a special focus on companies producing chewing gum and functional ingredients. Finally, consumers seeking healthy products with functional benefits, such as improved gut microbiota or cognitive health.
Project objective
Development of functional chewing gums containing microencapsulated ingredients to improve consumers' intestinal and cognitive health and overall well-being. Microencapsulation aims to optimise the controlled release of these active ingredients and improve their stability during the manufacturing process.
Project description
XICLETFUN aims to create chewing gums with therapeutic and health-promoting properties through the use of advanced microencapsulation techniques. Four types of functional chewing gum will be developed: those containing prebiotic fibres, satiating plant proteins, coronavirus inhibitors, and nootropic flavours for cognitive well-being. The project is based on physicochemical microencapsulation technology to better protect bioactive compounds and achieve more controlled release. Over a two-year period, the project includes a regulatory review, ingredient selection and pilot-scale demonstration of chewing gum manufacturing.
